West Suffolk Voluntary Association for the Blind

Befriending service

At a time when many have already lost a life long partner and have other age related health problems, losing your sight is the last thing you want to happen. If friends and family are remote then sight loss can make people prisoners in their own homes. Thankfully, help is at hand from our volunteer ‘befriending’ service.

The befriender will usually call once a week, depending on other commitments, and spend a couple of hours talking, possibly helping with the dishes or reading correspondence and helping with any paperwork. Shopping trips, outings and even doctor/hospital appointments might also feature.

Our befriending volunteers are subject to appropriate recruitment procedures (including DBS checks) and undergo specific training for this role. Personality matching of befriender to befriendee and the manner in which introductions are made, play a large part in the success of the service.
